LME futures provide members of the metal and investment communities with an opportunity to transfer and take on price risk. According to LME glossary, a futures contract is the obligation to buy or sell a standard quantity of a specified asset (metal) on a set date, at a fixed price agreed today.
Both aluminium (High grade primary aluminium) and aluminium alloy (A380.1, 226 or AD12.1 aluminium alloy) are traded in LME as Future Contracts
AlToolz offers the range of LME Official Prices settled during the LME trading sessions. LME Official Price is the last bid and offer price quoted during the second Ring session. The LME Official Price is used as the global reference for physical contracts. The LME Official Settlement Price is the price at which all LME futures are settled. That is the logic behind its global acceptance as a reference price for the aluminium industry people.
When we refer to LME aluminium prices, we actually talk about LME Official Settlement Price (for primary aluminium) or the official CASH Sellers price (offer), announced each day by the LME. By Cash Price we mean the current price in the market for cash/spot contracts. LME cash contracts are for delivery on two business days forward from the trading day. Similarly, Buyer Price is the quoted market buying price or bid and Seller Price is the quoted market selling price. Another thing to be aware of while understanding LME aluminium prices is the Prompt date or the settlement date of a futures contract. Prompt date is the date by which an LME warrant must be delivered by the seller and paid for by the buyer of a futures contract.
LME Aluminium contract is settled in Cash, Three month (3M) and three forward December prompts (DEC1, DEC2 and DEC3; denoting next three December contracts from the trading day.)
LME Aluminium Alloy contract is settled in Cash, Three month (3M) and one forward December prompt (DEC1; denoting next one December contract from the trading day.)
Final Evening Evaluations (FEE) are the prices at the close of business on each business day by the LME Quotations Committee and confirmed by the LCH.Clearnet. These are sometimes referred to as ‘LME Closing Prices’. You will find this price under AlToolz on one day delayed basis.
